Lomography Portraits in Vancouver: a Diana lens mounted to my Canon 5D2

Lois, Ryder and I are on vacation in Vancouver, and I’m loving the fall colors they have out here!  Today, we were headed down to Grounds for Coffee (the most amazing place in Vancouver for cinnamon buns).  As we were walking down the street, Lois was looking so gorgeous (although, that’s pretty normal for her;-)….I couldn’t help but pull out my camera to take a few shots of her with the fall background.

For the photographers that follow my blog, you may be interested to know that I was also experimenting with a Diana 55mm lens mounted to my 5D2.

For this first shot, I used my standard travel lens (Canon 24-105 f4)

Then, I pulled out the Diana 55mm plastic lens to see what it looks like.  There are no photoshop effects added to this image – other than a quick black point adjustment, this shot is straight out of camera.  The Diana lens has really poor optics…..very soft, and extremely blurry around the outside edges.  But – the dreamy and soft look is all part of the fun in using this kind of lens:-)

I’m looking forward to having fun with these plastic lenses over the next bit and seeing what kind of cool effects they can produce.

I also bought some cool new toys at Beauphoto in Vancouver…..any photographers care to guess what I bought? Stay tuned for some interesting photography that I’ll be doing with those new toys:-)
